Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage

A dinner party is often a pleasurable time for everyone but the host, so the important point to keep in mind is that “planning” is a key part of a successful dinner party.

All too often, hosts make the mistake of over-exerting themselves, leaving little time to enjoy the evening themselves. The following information can help you make it an enjoyable night for both yourself and your guests.

Firstly, make a guest list so you’ll know how many people to cook for. Let your guests know the time and date of the dinner well in advance and be sure to remind them shortly before the party.

Make a checklist of ingredients and drinks that you’ll need and try to buy them a couple of days before the party. cleaning till the day off, you might find yourself more stressed than you need to be. Keeping the menu simple doesn’t mean it has to be boring. The night will also be a lot easier for you if you prepare dishes that can be laid out at the centre of the table, allowing guests to serve themselves.

You can provide some music and the type of music will depend on the type of guests. You might not think of it, but the night will  run a lot smoother with background music for the evening.

    D. How to enjoy yourself at a party.

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage

"Family" is of course an elastic(弹性的) word. But when British people say that their society is based on  family life, they are thinking of "family" in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father, and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and independent family—hence the tremendous importance of marriage in British life. For both the man and the woman, marriage means leaving one's parents and starting one's own life. The man's first duty will  then be to his wife, and the wife's to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of the new home. Their children will be their common responsibility and theirs alone. Neither the wife's parents nor the husband's, nor their brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, have any right to interfere with them—they  are their own masters.

Readers of novels like Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice will know that in former times marriage among wealthy  families were arranged by the girl's parents, that is, it was the parents' duty to find a suitable husband for their  daughter, preferably a rich one, and by skillful encouragement—lead him eventually to ask their permission to marry her.

Until that time, the girl was protected and maintained in the parents' home and the financial relief(减轻) of getting rid  of her could be seen in their giving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry(嫁妆 ).It is very different today. Most girls of today get a job when they leave school and become financially independent before their marriage.

This has had two results. A girl chooses her own husband, and she gets no dowry.

51.What does the author mean by "Family is of course an elastic word"?

    A. Different families have different ways of life.

    B. Different times produce different families.

    C. Different nations have different families.

    D. Different definitions could be given to the word.

52.For an English family, the husband's duty is ______.

    A. financial while the wife's is running the home

    B. defending the family which the wife's is running the home

    C. supporting the family while the wife's is financial

    D. independent while the wife's is dependent

53.Everything is decided in a British family ______.

    A. by the couple

    B. with the help of their parents

    C.by brothers and sisters

D.with the help of aunts and uncles

    C. It gives quite some idea of English social life in the past.

    D. It provides a lot of information of former-time wealthy families.

55.With regard to marriage in Britain, present-day girls differ from former time girls in ____.

    A. the right to get married

    B. more parental support

    C.finding a job

    D. social position

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage

Praise is a powerful tool but many parents have misconceptions about what it does and how it works.

Praise encourages motivation and confidence, but a surprising number of people think it's the cause of  jealousy, laziness and resentment. What are the most common assumptions about praise?

“There's no need to say anything.”

If things are going well, you may think there's no need to say anything. This attitude can be summed  up as “if I don't say anything, then everything's OK”. What  this really means is “I'll only say something  when there is something to criticize”.

“If I say 'well done', they'll stop trying.”

Do you think that if you compliment your children they'll slack off? If we are praised for a job well done,

it generally encourages us to do better, not worse. The disappointment we feel when good work is not recognized   gives rise to the feeling “why should I bother if nobody notices?”

“If I praise one, the others will be jealous.”

If you are honest and fair in your praise and recognize the special talents of each child, they won't resent  praise given to their siblings. Each will feel valued for the unique individuals they are. Children who feel good about themselves are usually generous in their praise of other people. Never use praise of one as a way of implicitly criticizing another. For example, “you're always so cheerful...”with its implied message “... unlike your moody brother”.

“What if there's nothing to praise?”

There is always something to praise. You have to catch your child doing  something right. Have a positive attitude to the things he does and remember the praise must always be genuine. Your child will quickly sense when you are lying.

56. Many parents have misunderstandings about

   A. how powerful praise is

   B. what praise is

   C. what praise does and how it works

   D. how to give genuine praises to their children

57. Why do some parents consider it unnecessary to say anything to praise their children?

   A. Because they think things aren’t always going well.

   B. Because they don’t like to praise their children.

   C. Because they only think it necessary to say something when there is something to             criticize.

   D. Because they don’t like to criticize their children.

58. When you are praising one kid, you should

   A. praise other kids too

   B. explain the kid’s special talents

   C. tell others to be generous and not to be jealous

   D. make sure you don’t hurt another kid indirectly

59. Children who ________ are usually generous in their praise of other people.

   A. feel good about themselves

   B. feel bad about themselves

   C. seldom receive praises

   D. receive false praises

60. Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?

   A. How to Be Good Parents

   B. Misunderstandings About Praise

   C. The Power of the Praise

   D. All Kids Love Praises

Section B Short Answer questions(15 points, 3 for each)

Directions: Answer each of the questions in less than 10 words.

Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own languagebut few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for thissome obvioussome perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounceand consequently never set about tackling it in the right way. Far too many people fail to realize that  pronouncing a foreign language is a skillone that needs careful training of a special kindand one that cannot be  acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of languagewhile recognizing the importance  of a good accenttend to neglectin their practical teachingthe branch of study concerned with speaking the language.

So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some  of the lesson time to thisand by his whole attitude to the subject should get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy  of receiving his close attention.

Besides this question of the time given to pronunciationthere are two other requirements for the teacherthe firstknowledge; the second technique.

It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languagesbetween the speech habits of English people and thosesayof your students. Unless the teacher has such a pictureany comments he may make on his students‘ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much useand lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time-wasted.

61.If people succeed in understanging the problem of ________ ,they can speak foreign          languages as well as their native languages.

62.What does the word "one" in the fifth sentence of the first paragraph refer to?

63.What are the three requirements for a language teacher according to the passage?

64.The teacher should make his students feel that pronunciation is a matter  ________.

65.What is the passage mainly about?

IV. Translation (20 points, 4 or ach)

Each item consists of one or two sentences. These sentences are all taken from the reading passages you have just read. You can refer back to the passages so as to identify their meanings in the context.

66. A dinner party is often a pleasurable time for everyone but the host, so the  important point to keep in mind is that “planning” is a key part of a successful dinner party.

67. You can provide some music and the type of music will depend on the type of guests. You might not think of it, but the night will run a lot smoother with background music for the evening.

68. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of  the new home.

69. The disappointment we feel when good work is not recognized gives rise to the  feeling “why should I bother if nobody notices?”

70. Have a positive attitude to the things he does and remember the praise must always be genuine. Your child will quickly sense when you are lying.
